Should You Carry On Or Call It A Day?

You’re still sharp, full of energy, and not quite ready to swap your work boots for gardening gloves just yet.

Across Teesside, plenty of people in their late 50’s or early 60s feel the same — still working, but starting to wonder…Is it time to stop? Or should I keep going a bit longer?

In this week’s blog, we explore the reasons why some Teessiders carry on working, why others step back, and how to figure out what’s right for you.

Why Some People Keep Working

There’s no rule that says you must retire the minute you hit a certain age — but that’s a common assumption a lot of people make.

Some carry on because:

  • The pay helps – especially with rising costs.
  • They like the routine — getting up, having a purpose and seeing workmates.
  • They still love the job – or at least, don’t hate it!

After all, folks around here take pride in a good day’s graft!

Why Others Decide It’s Time to Step Back

On the flip side, there’s a lot to people calling it a day – and feeling good about it.

Common reasons to retire (or semi-retire) include:

  • Wanting time back: You’ve put your shift in, and now it’s your turn.
  • Spending time with family: The grandkids are growing up fast, and they don’t want to miss the moments.
  • Travel plans, hobbies or just a slower pace: Sometimes it’s about freedom, not finances.

It’s not all or nothing, either. Some ease into retirement by going part-time, taking casual shifts, or working on their own terms – and that’s fine too!

The Big Questions: What’s Right for You?

This is where it matters.

Liking your job — or being good at it — is one thing. But the real question is… do you have the freedom to choose what’s next?

And let’s not ignore the emotional side of it.

For many people, work isn’t just a job — it’s routine, purpose, and identity all rolled into one. So, stepping away can feel like losing a bit of yourself. Suddenly, the days look different, the phone’s quieter, and you might wonder where you fit in.

It’s completely normal. Retirement can be exciting, but it’s also a big shift.
